What is it about fabric lying on the floor that draws all the attention of little furry felines?

As I was sitting at the dining room table, sewing together the blocks I so carefully laid out, my curious cats were eying the fabric laid out on the floor. And scheming. Yes, scheming.

One of them decides to go for it. He runs across the room, and before I know what is happening, stops and skids directly on the fabric squares. The squares fly everywhere! I scream! I shout! "Argh!"

Thank goodness I took a picture of the layout before the above scene happened.

Enter the baby gates - now called cat quilt gates in my household. We can now live happily together.

I finally decided on a quilt design for Baby D. Yes, I'm still on a half-square triangle kick. I think I will actually finish this one in a timely manner though! I'm hoping to finish it soon, because I have a gazillion other quilts and items I'd like to make for baby when I'm done with this one.

Wonderland Baby Quilt

My good friends, Ali and Chris, had a baby girl in early November. Everyone was so excited to welcome their baby, Sophie. Somehow I managed to finish making her a baby quilt just in time for Ali's shower.

I used two charm packs of Wonderland fabric by Momo for the top and some Anna Maria Horner Garden Party dots for the backing. The Wonderland fabric is one of my favorite fabric lines. Sadly it seems hard to find now. Luckily, I bought two more charm packs of this fabric before they stopped making it and so you might just see another one of these quilts sometime soon.

I'm trying my hand at half square triangles, but I'm not sure I like the result so far. Are my squares too big (they will be 4 inches by the time they are sewn together)? Do I need more prints? I think I might. Perhaps it is too early to judge.

The beginnings of something

Now that wasn't so bad. Once I finally decided on something and drummed up the courage to cut into some fabric, I didn't want to stop! My inspiration wheel was turning and suddenly my project list grew longer and longer as I found several quilts and items I can't wait to make out of my stash fabrics. Yes, my stash fabrics! But of course, buying a small amount of new fabric never hurts...oh the justification of a fabric addict.

However, just when I was getting into the swing of things, a winter cold has stopped me in my tracks. Luckily I'm on the mend and I feel a good solid weekend of sewing in my very near future.

What are you working on these days?

It's been so long since I've sewn or blogged, and now I'm pretty rusty at both. Since we moved last April, I've unpacked my sewing machine and fabric, but both have been sitting where I left them hardly touched ever since. I keep going into the room we've designated as a sewing room (for now, that will soon change) and staring at my fabric, wanting to make something, but afraid to start. The picture above is actually a baby blanket in progress that has since been finished (since the summer) and given to its intended recipient. But, I'm rusty at taking photos and uploading, so it's all I've got for now. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to convince myself to quit staring and start doing. Just jump in. There's nothing to be afraid of. Right?

The reason I've been away

Although it's not over yet, I suspect that I'll always look back on this summer and think, "Geesh, what the heck did I get myself into?" With hope, I'll also think, it was so worth it. I ran a 10 miler, a 10k and in a week and a half I'll have completed my second ever triathlon. I went to Paris with my mom and sister and presented at a conference. I went to the beach with friends. I've also painted three rooms, and with even more hope, I'll have completely refinished a kitchen. Oh, wait, let me back up a little bit.

We bought a house. (Photo from one year ago of house with overgrown front yard. Don't worry, we got rid of all those plants soon after we moved in before they completely overtook the house!.)

After a very stressful and dramatic house search, we finally bought a house and moved in April. We soon learned that HGTV makes things look way too easy. Even painting a room is not simple. But so far, the end result has been worth all of the sweat and tears. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some kitchen cabinets to finish sanding .

Blossom Quilt

Thanks for all of the nice comments about the Bee quilt. After finishing that quilt, I just couldn't stop quilting. I decided to finally finish the Blossom quilt that I started last May.

As you may remember, I was inspired to make this quilt after seeing this lovely version. I pieced the top using a jelly roll and charm pack of the Blossom by Urban Chicks fabrics.

I used fabric from the same line for the back. I love this fabric.

I've got another quilt or two in the works. I really can't stop (and I'm ok with that)!

Bee quilt

There may be a blizzard outside, but we're cozy inside under our bee quilt.

As you may recall, I finished quilting this two snowstorms ago (three storms in less than three months = wild!). It was a beast to quilt, and that was just doing horizontal lines. I'm not sure I could have handled any other type of quilting. I love the horizontal lines though. I really do.

Let's talk a little about this blue. I originally wanted to use something a bit brighter (ala Amy Butler lotus blue) for the back, but my local fabric store is sadly lacking in solid colors these days. So I "settled" for this pale blue. After living with it for a little while though, I now think it's perfect blue for this quilt. A brighter blue would have been too much.

Snow

I have a confession. I dislike January. It's the worst time of year. There, I said it. I didn't blog at all during January but now it's over. Let's move on.

Another blizzard hit Washington, DC this weekend. There's currently about two feet of snow outside my door. It's lovely. It gives me the perfect excuse to hole up inside and work on another quilt. Oh, it's good to be sewing again!

The feeling of satisfaction. Several tv shows and movies later, I finished binding it by hand last night. I'm going to throw it in the wash tonight and let it get all crinkly good. I'll post pictures of the finished quilt this weekend.

One of my favorite things is learning something new. I think most of the people that read this blog can relate. Isn't that one reason why we create things? To learn a new skill and learn how something is made. Of course there are many reasons why I love to create, but I think learning how to make something is a big one.

So what does the photo of the camera have to do with learning new things? Peter gave me photography lessons! I start my class in February. I'm so excited. I've been wanting to learn how to take better photos for a while. I guess you will all know how the class goes by the quality of pictures on this blog!

Today I am 29 years old. I'll have a hot cup of tea as I do every morning. I'll eat at two of my favorite restaurants in DC for lunch and dinner. I'll browse the aisles of my favorite craft store, Joann. Maybe I'll do a little quilting. Maybe I'll pick up a new knitting project. Maybe I'll make a new skirt. Whatever I end up doing, I'll enjoy today (and tomorrow). I hope you will, too.

Since my birthday is this week, I thought I'd celebrate it all week long by posting a favorite thing every day this week. I hope you'll share your favorite things too!

One of my favorite things is the first big snow storm of the season. Washington D.C had a record breaking snow storm this past weekend. It was a good excuse to stay close to home and make biscuits and beef stew to share with friends.

All that snow left my arms tired though. No, not from shoveling.

From quilting. I finished quilting my Pieced Together Quilting Bee block quilt! And oh, how I love it. Now I just need to bind it and throw it in the wash.

I'm not making a lot of handmade gifts for the holidays this year. I just don't have the time or the motivation. I'm slowly working on my Pieced Together Quilting Bee quilt in between looking at houses and work. It's nice to have a project that I can pick up for a few minutes here and there. I'm also working on a secret project that I'll share after the holidays if I get it done in time. What are you giving for holiday presents this year?

Yes, people, we have houses on our brains these days over here. And I'm not talking about houses made out of fabric either (although I do think about those too). Wish us luck as we embark on this real estate adventure!

In other news, it is officially cold outside! At least I have a good excuse to drink hot chocolate, not that I really needed an excuse before. I highly recommend this delightful mix (introduced to me by my sister-in-law). Stay warm, friends.

Ambitious, my plans were for the weekend. I almost finished the quilt top, and would have if I hadn't miscalculated (guessed) the amount of yardage I would need for the sashing. I was just a little bit shy. Then of course I had a movie to see, and friends to visit, and errands to run and then it was time for bed on Sunday night. It's almost finished though. Now that I have enough fabric to finish the top and to complete the backing, I might start quilting by the end of the week. The question is, how should I quilt it? It's too big for me to even think of free motion quilting it with my limited patience and FM skills so please don't even mention it. I was thinking of doing vertical lines, what do you think? Any other ideas?

Also, I'd really like to improve my photography skills. Can anyone recommend a good book on digital photography and/or Photoshop?

Oh, and did you notice my new big a** ironing board? I asked for it on my wedding registry. Peter asked for a huge tv, I asked for a huge ironing board. You all understand, I'm sure.

Today I am thankful I'm not out in the Black Friday mess. However, several stores are trying to woo me through email. Must. be. strong.

I took the day off from work today so I could sew, and sew is what I intend to do! I'm hoping to at least finish my Pieced Together Quilting Bee top. I've had all of the blocks back since May. Should I be daring and actually hope to have this quilted by the end of the weekend? Of course that means I'd have to go out into the shopping mess at some point to get the backing and batting and thus be likely to be pulled into other kinds of shopping as well which means less time sewing! Hmmmm, a conundrum, people.

Ruffled Wristlet

Now that I've finished documenting our wedding, it's back to the regularly (or so I wish) scheduled programming-sewing! I'm grateful to finally have time to sew again.

My friend Catherine saw a ruffled wristlet I made a few months ago during her last visit and gave an audible "Ohhhhhh, cute!" I immediately knew what to make her for her birthday earlier this month. I even had the materials already on hand. It doesn't get much easier than that.

One of the things I love about this pattern, besides how cute it is, is how little material it uses. You can make this by just going through your scrap stash (because you know you have one). I think it's a really useful design too - just big enough to hold all of the essentials but little enough to grab and go for a night out or a trip to the gym. I use mine a lot. I'll try to take a picture of it the next time I am home during daylight hours, which sadly, is not often these days. Darn you winter!

Wedding - DIY details

Planning the wedding was fun, albeit a little stressful at times. Putting our own personal touches on the wedding was very important to me (and the crafting relieved some of that stress!). Here are a few our diy wedding details.

My dad and I cut some old plywood which I painted and used to tell guests where to go.

I made the flower I wore in my hair with a simple silk flower and a hair comb.

We wrapped the mason jars that held our flowers with twine for a rustic look. Aren't those flowers gorgeous!

My brother-in-law, Kenny, made our huppah. He found some old trees in his backyard and propped them inside some flower pots. My sister, Kathy, potted the flowers. As for the cloth, I sewed ribbon on each corner of some sheer ivory voile and tied it to each pole. I am keeping the cloth in hopes that someday our children will be married under it as well.

I created the escort cards, invitations, and table numbers using some beautiful letterpress stationary that I found at Target. We saved a lot of money making our paper suite ourselves, and I don't think I could have found a more appropriate design for our wedding.

I also hand painted our wedding cake topper. Standing next to us are our kitties, Bo and Kitty. Silly, I know, but it was fun having them on our cake.

Wedding - Flower Girl Dresses

I have a few more details I want to document about our wedding day, so I hope you'll bear with me through just a few more wedding related posts.

I had a hard time trying to find cute yet affordable flower girl dresses so decided to make them myself. I think colored flower girl dresses are cuter than the traditional white flower girl dress. Also, I selfishly wanted to be the only one wearing white.

I found the perfect fabric at G Street fabrics - a light, but rich purple dupioni silk and used Simplicity 4647 for the pattern. The dupioni was very easy to work with, and the pattern went together quickly.

For the sash, I used purple ribbon that matched the color of the bridesmaid dresses (which were cocktail dresses from Nordstrom, by the way). I pinned the sash with a silk flower I found at Joann's.

I seriously love how cute the dresses turned out. I was afraid the girls wouldn't like them, but they LOVED them too. They danced happily in them all night long!

Wedding - part two

Halloween Recap

I've always loved Halloween. Growing up, I would decorate my bedroom with pictures of cats dressed up as witches and haunted houses. I used to read a lot of ghost stories too, which is odd because I now avoid scary movies. I must have been a tough kid!

I don't decorate for Halloween anymore, (maybe someday when we own our house), but I still like to dress up. Because of our wedding and honeymoon this fall, Halloween was kind of an afterthought. I still managed to come up with a decent costume I think. Peter and I dressed up as Archie and Victoria Lodge. I think my costume only made sense when I was right next to Peter - I mean Archie - though.

Last year I was Audrey Hepburn and Peter dressed up as a 1920's gangster. I already know what I'm going to be next year - but it's a surprise so you'll have to wait 12 months to find out.

P.S. How is it November already?

In love with Love

I'm back from our honeymoon in Italy! It was fantastic - we ate, hiked, rode bicycles, stood in awe in front of ruins and paintings, and enjoyed being newly married. After being away for two weeks though, it's nice to be home.

I don't have much to share right now, as we haven 't gone through our Italy pictures yet and we're waiting for wedding photos from the photographer (I've seen some sneak peeks and they are gorgeous so far!). Right now my house is a mess and filled with registry boxes, a very needy kitty is on my lap (he'd rather I pet him than type this post - he has let me know), and I need to get ready for my first day back at work. But I hope to find some time to sew soon, especially after seeing an announcement in my email box that Amy Butler has done it again - a new fabric line, Love, and some new patterns. Have you seen? I'm loving her new Love fabrics, especially the one featured on her new Liverpool shirt pattern (I like that pattern too):

Simplicity 2584

Finally, a non-wedding related post! This post is long overdo. I made this dress earlier in the summer after seeing this beautiful version. It was a fun dress to make too. I actually stayed home sick from work one day, but not wanting to spend the day on the couch, I instead revived myself by cutting and sewing away. By the end of the day, I felt completely renewed.

Two weeks

Yes, I know it's all been wedding wedding wedding around here, but with only two weeks to go until I say "I do," it's hard NOT to talk about the wedding. People keep telling me how calm I seem, but I've definitely had some not-to-proud moments this past week behind closed doors. The small details left to decide and a busy time at my real job have been a bit overwhelming at times.

Everything is mostly in place, however, and we are so excited. The pictures in this post are of the ceremony and reception site. These were taken this summer, so just imagine the leaves with a bit more color.

Let's hope the weather two weeks from today resembles the day these pictures were taken - sunny and warm - rather than today's weather - drizzly and chilly! I'm prepared for whatever happens, however. I know that no matter what, it will be a beautiful (and FUN!) day.

Flower girl Dresses

They're essentially done! Since this picture, I have hemmed them and now just need to add a simple ribbon sash. The color is really off in this photo. The fabric is a beautiful, rich, light purple (not quite lavender) dupioni silk. I found the silk at G-Street Fabrics back in March and knew I wanted to make something out of it for the wedding. After looking for non-white flower girl dresses (call me selfish, but I want to be the only one wearing white on the big day), my decision was made! The silk was easy to work with, though it frayed a ton! I used Simplicity 4647 for the pattern and have nothing but high marks to give it. However, I did omit the layers of tulle it called for as the dress puffs out enough on it's own. I'll show pictures of the dresses in action after the wedding!

DIY Wedding To-do's

Kristen and I are getting married on the same day, exactly one month from today. October 11, 2009. It's been fun following along with her as she plans her wedding. She is also being very hands on and crafting a personal wedding. I'm sure her event will be gorgeous. She asked me this week what is left on my to-do list, and so Kristen, I am happy to oblige.

DIY Wedding - Napkins!

I finished all of our wedding napkins - all one hundred and twenty of them. Aren't they pretty?

Now, before I let you sit there thinking that I slaved away this summer hemming napkins in my free time, I'll let you in on a little secret: I only did a proper hem on thirty of them. The rest got trimmed with pinking shears. (Shhhhhh - don't tell Martha!) Why waste time and yardage on napkins that I intend to cut up and quilt after the wedding? By my calculations, I saved myself at least 24 hours of work and three yards of fabric. Those hems add up!

I'm already thinking about quilts to make with these after the wedding is over. Any suggestions?

My little temper tantrum

Oh.my.gosh. Is it really September? I am not ready. No I am not. I'm not ready to pull out my sweaters and jackets. I'm not ready to hear the drone of football games streaming from a tv somewhere. I'm not ready for the sun to set before I get home. I'm not ready for the wedding to be here and gone. I'm just not ready! Tonight I am having an internal temper tantrum about Fall being here without my permission. Perhaps I can find a silver lining in it though in the form of some yarn and needles that weren't quite ready for the summer earlier this year.

Yes, late again. Perhaps August will be the month that I finally get caught up. I'm hopeful. For July, the challenge was to do a block that incorporated circles. I wimped out and decided to applique circles versus curved seaming. I hope she likes it! I love the fabrics she sent.

Format change - more info

Thanks for being so understanding about the format change of my RSS feed. Since several of you asked, I thought I'd give you a little more information on how I found out that my content was being illegally published as well as how to change the settings of your RSS feed to make it more difficult for people to do this.

I found out by accident. I was actually looking up a dress pattern that I had made to see other versions of the dress. I googled "Simplicity XXXX" (I can't remember the number right now) and I clicked on the third site that appeared. To my surprise, I saw it was my post - word for word! There were no links back to my site, and I was not given credit for the post anywhere. I couldn't really understand how it got there. After browsing through the site, I found several other posts of mine on there. The site appeared to have posts from other sewers, though I didn't recognize the other blogs (again, the original posters were not given credit and there were no links to the original blog). I found out who the publisher of this blog was (someone in Singapore), and emailed him and asked him to take down my content. Thankfully, he did. My guess is that this person set up a blog of their own and ripped off other sewing blogs with the intent of getting money from adclicks. I was never given an explanation. The scary thing is that I found this out by accident, so I have no idea how many other sites out there may be publishing my content without my permission.

Changing your RSS feed to "preview" mode makes it harder for people to rip off your posts. In Blogger, click on the Settings Tab, then click on "Site Feed". Under "Blog Posts Feed", click on the "short" option.

Hopscotch Quilt

My very good friend, who I've known since we met in Brownies many many years ago, had her first baby this summer. It's a good thing I finished this in time for her shower in May (yes, I have a backlog of projects to show), because little baby Hank surprised us all by showing up a week earlier than expected!

I used the Hopscotch Quilt pattern in Super Simple Quilts #1 and some Denyse Schmidt Katie Jump Rope fabrics. It really was a simple quilt to make. This was the first time that I tried free motion quilting. I'm not one hundred percent happy with the quilting, but it turned out OK. The BSR foot on my Bernina helped it from turning out to be a complete disaster, I'm sure. Practice, practice, practice, they say.

On a side note, I really need to find a suitable area to take pictures of quilts. This was taken in my upstairs hall, which is entirely too narrow to even get a full shot of a baby quilt.

Two months

Yesterday was the two month mark for our upcoming wedding. I've been pretty hands on in the planning process, and while it's been stressful at times (for me and those around me), I think I'll look back on the day and be glad when I see my personal touch in some of the details. I have a lot of thoughts to share about wedding planning. I feel like I've learned a lot in this process. But I'll save that for a longer post. For now, here's a wedding board (one of many) that I have been using as my inspiration.

I miss this little space. I want to be here more than I have been. So, this morning I decided I'm going to try and be here more often, no matter what. I don't think I can promise to post every day, but how about every other day? I'm going to try people, I really am. Because I have things to show you. Things I've made (like the spiderweb block I made for Stephanie for the Pieced Together Quilting Bee). Things that have inspired me. Things I just want to share. Also, I miss hearing from you all.

This weekend I took the cover off of my sewing machine and made a dress out of Garden Party fabric. I can't wait to show you (though I have other things I might show you first).

Catching up

It seems like a lot of us in blog land getting caught up in summer. Posts are fewer and far between when there is so much else going on out there, in the real world. I was about to admit that I am enjoying the lazy days of summer, but realized there has been nothing lazy about my days. Whoever came up with that false statement anyways?

One of my reasons for being absent from this blog is wedding planning. It kicked into high gear at the four month mark, and now we are past the three month mark. It's been fun planning, but not until I bought a dress did it become that way. Before that, I devoted every spare moment to making a muslin of a dress and watched summer slip away and my stress level skyrocket. Then, I found a dream of a dress and now I have my life back and can devote my spare time to sewing other things, like these blocks for the Pieced Together Quilting Bee from May! How did I let things get so behind?

There have been other events too: family visits; appendectomies (he is ok now); new babies to visit; friends to be with; Sopranos, Seasons 1, 2, and 3; and the usual life activities. I miss my sewing machine though and I look through my flickr favorites daily, planning my next projects. I hope to be present on this blog more often for the rest of the summer. You may have to put up with some wedding related posts from me, but not even I can talk and think wedding all the time (smile) and so I will have a few non-wedding related projects in the works to share soon.

Summer Dress Week - Day 1 - Made by You!

I don't know about you, but when it's hot out, as it has been for the past few weeks, I love to wear a simple summer dress. Comfort and cuteness combined in one garment, how can a girl go wrong? If you're like me and are looking for some summer dress inspiration, you've come to the right place. Scenes from a Tuesday

It's Tuesday already and it's only Tuesday, know what I mean? I hope you enjoyed your weekend, and if you're reading this in the States, your long weekend (for most of us anyways). Living in DC, Memorial Day weekend means a lot of bikers. I wonder if bikers look forward to this weekend every year - riding along side a half million other bikers all at once. I imagine they must. I attended one bbq on Monday and did finish my dress in time. But wouldn't you know, I didn't get any pictures. The dress is Simplicity 3503. I'll write up a full review when I get a picture, but for now let's say I felt very tres chic and plan to make another dress from this pattern.

After the bbq I began preparations for my friend's baby shower this weekend. I decided to make some fabric bunting in hopes that my friend will be able to use the flags later in the nursery (the nursery colors are green and yellow) or for birthdays or other baby events. What a fun project it was to make! Tonight I plan to cut out my fabric for Simplicity 2584 and hope that I'll be able to finish it in time to wear to the shower on Saturday.

Summer Dress Sewalong - Planning

If you haven't started thinking about a dress you'll make for the Summer Dress Sewalong, don't worry, there's still plenty of time. I'm heading off to Joann's in a little while to take advantage of their sale on Simplicity patterns (5 for $5). On my wish list is:

Simplicity 2584. I've already seen a couple of these made up in solid colors and they're just gorgeous (see here and here). I love the neckline detail.

Simplicity 2586. This looks like a very basic design, but I think the quilted trim on View C is an interesting detail.

Simplicity 2702. I was sold on this dress when I saw it featured in the latest Threads magazine.

New Look 6457. I bought some fabric a few months ago with this style in mind. More on that later though!

Although it's a long weekend, I don't think I'll have a lot of opportunity to get a lot of sewing done. Weekends tend to fill up so fast! I'm hoping to finish one dress that I started earlier this week just in time for a Memorial day bbq on Monday. What are your weekend or sewing plans?

Sewing machine cozy

Back in this post I mentioned that I had plans for all of my fabric. What I meant was that I eventually plan to use the fabric, but sometimes, I admit, I don't have a specific plan for the fabric. I definitely didn't plan on using a charm pack of Wonderland by Momo fabric I had on hand for a sewing machine cozy, but I'm so glad I did!

I love love love the Wonderland fabric line. This sewing machine cozy is the perfect way to show off the gorgeousness of all those prints and I'm pretty sure my machine is happy to be so beautifully covered. How can you not smile at those cute scissors and dots in such pretty colors? Every time I walk by my sewing room now I slip my head in for a quick peak. I know some people just wouldn't understand, but I'm pretty sure you [readers] do.

For the cozy, I simply sewed together seven rows of charm squares, attached two side panels of the some pink and purple dot fabric from Anna Maria Horner's Garden Party line cut to size (measure the width and height of your machine and add an inch or two for seam allowance and ease), and hemmed. Voila! Now I'm happy that I can look at those pretty prints on a regular basis and my machine is happy that it's now dust free.

Summer Dress Sewalong

So, it must be all of the quilting, but I think my [clothing] sewing block might just be about over. Over the past couple of weeks I've been filled with ideas and inspiration, namely for some summer dresses. Several of you mentioned an interest in playing along in a summer dress sewalong. I hope that by doing so, we can motivate and inspire each other to make at least one fabulous summer dress for our wardrobes this season.

The details: Sew a summer dress (or two or three or four!), post a picture of it in the Summer Dress Sewalong flickr pool, and I'll feature it on this blog the week of June 15th through the 19th. If you don't have a flickr account, just send me a link to your blog post with a picture of the dress. A few additional items: If you've already made a summer dress, it counts, as long as you made it this year! Also, dresses for children count too! Oh, and I'll probably throw a door prize in for a randomly chosen player.

Fruition

I've been wanting to make a Blossom block quilt ever since I saw this picture on flickr almost two years ago. I wanted one of my own so much that I immediately bought the materials. A few days ago I started the quilt. I've pieced together the top and just need to quilt and bind it. Further proof that I do have plans for all of my fabric, some of those plans just come to fruition quicker than others.

Weekend = Possibility

I love waking up early on Saturday mornings and thinking about all the potential the weekend ahead holds. It's a kind of quiet excitement. Do you feel that way too? My weekend is looking wonderful so far. First on the agenda, a run (as soon as I finish this post). Next, I plan to finish up my friend's baby quilt. I ended up leaving the stripe in; the solid green was just too bright.

What else will I do? A game of golf tomorrow, lunch outside, a dress to be sewn...Speaking of dresses, I've been thinking about hosting a spring/summer dress week at the end of May/early June to motivate us (cough cough - me) to finally check off those dresses we've been meaning to make. Anyone want to play along?

Blocks to get through sewer's block

My absence from this blog was at first do to the warm sunshine that appeared a few weeks ago, but is now only a memory with the week of rain we've had. Then I was busy preparing for the transition to a new job. But now, the excuse is that I have sewer's block. I enter my sewing room, look at my fabric, look at my patterns, and just have no idea what to sew. So, what to do? Why, sew blocks of course.

Here is my contribution to the Pieced Together Quilting Bee for April:

Erin requested rectangles and squares. I think this quilt is going to look great.

I also started a quilt for my childhood friend who is having a baby boy (if the sonogram is correct!) in July. I'm using the Hopscotch quilt pattern from Super Simple Quilts #1. So far it has been super simple, though I think I might substitute the horizontal green stripe fabric for a solid green to add a little more oomph. What do you think?

I know I've been a little absent from this blog lately. The truth is, I've been spending as much time as possible outside and enjoying the few days of Spring we've had. Also, I'm starting a new job today (yay!) which has been a very welcome distraction for the past few weeks. That doesn't mean that others haven't been sewing. April is my month to send out fabrics for the Pieced Together Quilting Bee that I'm a part of. I want to make a quilt for my living room sofa, so I decided on blues and greens (and polka dots of course). Here are the blocks I've received back so far:

...sewing projects just don't work out. I haven't yet decided if this one has or not.

It's Butterick 4978. I still need to hem the dress and reattach the neck binding, but I'm not sure I will because I'm not sure I like this dress. Don't get me wrong, I think the fit is good, and I like the style. I'm not crazy about the fabric. I used a satin backed crepe, when I should have used chiffon. The crepe feels, um, a little cheap to me. It's also a little too thick for all those gathers. Of course, I could just have mixed feelings right now because of that bias skirt which gave me more of a headache than it should have (lesson: staystitch staystitch staystitch!). We'll see if this dress ever gets finished or worn. I'll give myself a little time away from it to decide.

Asymmetrical Fold Skirt

A few months ago I picked up the inaugural issue of Stitch magazine. The main reason I bought it was because of the Asymmetrical Fold skirt, though it's filled with many other lovely patterns. I made the skirt right away. However, it's been hibernating in my closet waiting for warmer weather. I'm fully aware that I could rock this skirt with some boots, but for some reason I just didn't feel much like wearing skirts or dresses this winter. Now that Spring is here, I present to you my Asymmetrical Skirt.

I used a light weight dark denim and some Farmer's Market cotton for the facing. I love the contrast of the yellow with the dark denim. I had a few problems with the construction of the skirt, but I think that's more user error than pattern error. First, I cut out a wider back panel and added a few darts since the original back panel was too tight (I should have measured this first!). Then I had a little trouble with the buttonholes. When I measured the length of the buttonholes, I didn't take into account the many layers of fabric that I would have to sew and push the button through. So I ended up having to make them a little bigger than I normally would. Also, instead of using the button markings as called for on the pattern, I tried it on and marked where I thought the buttons should be placed. Other than that, I thought the pattern and instructions were clear and simple.

ETA: Caity reminded me that there are a few corrections for the pattern on the web: http://www.quiltingarts.com/STITCH/corrections/winter08.html. These were easy corrections to fix. Just read them before you make this skirt.

New Look 6807

My version:

A light, swingy top made from some stash jersey and New Look 6807. After reading the reviews of this top on Pattern Review, I raised the neckline a bit before cutting. I'm glad I did, otherwise I think this top would be too low cut for my comfort. I also lengthened and narrowed the sleeves.

I omitted the tie in the back neckline. I like the tie detail on the pattern, but I didn't want to add any more fuss to this busy print.

Pattern: New Look 6807
Fabric: Jersey from my stash (and I still have enough to make another top)
Modifications: Raised neckline, narrowed and lengthened sleeves, omitted back neck tie
Result: I really like this top and will probably make it again in a solid color.

Piece together quilting bee

When Katie announced the Pieced Together Quilting Bee, I jumped at the chance to join. Katie had the first month and requested an improv block that primarily used reds and blues and whatever else went. It was more challenging than I thought it would be to make, but I really enjoyed the process. I hope she likes it.

We've spent the better part of the last week trying to help Peter get over the flu. The lesson in all of this: get a flu shot. Thankfully I got mine in the fall so I've managed to avoid the bug so far. But poor Peter, it's not been an easy week for him. Making a huge batch of chicken soup was the least I could do to help him feel a little better. I used this simple soup recipe by Robin Miller, which I'm calling "Get Better Soon Soup" from now on. Of course I hope you don't ever have to use the recipe, but it might be nice to have on hand just in case.

Elissa's Quilt

I wanted a simple project to take my mind off of wedding things, and this fit the bill perfectly. I didn't even think too hard about the fabric choices, I let a Joann's fabric kit make the decision for me. Though a small part of me feels like I cheated a little bit, the fabric combination was too cute to pass up. Plus, the cutting line was ridiculously long that day. I used my own pattern inspired by the turning twenty quilt pattern and added a few extra fabrics such as those adorable houses.

The finished size of the quilt is 48" x 64". I quilted it using a diamond pattern to compliment the geometrical shapes of the piecing. I'm happy with how it turned out.

I made a little tag for the back using the alphabet stitches on my Bernina. I hope Elissa gets a lot of snuggles out of this quilt. I think it has a lifetime of snuggles to give.

Elissa's Quilt - Day 5

I'm in the home stretch of finishing this quilt. I finished quilting it yesterday and just need to finish up the binding, add a quilt tag, and wash and dry it. As you can see, I didn't use free motion quilting. I decided I just didn't have enough time to learn and practice free motion quilting on this gift, as I need to give it to its recipient tomorrow. I decided, however, that I would bind the quilt by hand, which isn't as hard or time consuming as I originally thought! To be honest though, I'm a little afraid I'm not doing it right. You all will be kind in case I'm not, right?

P.S. There's a sneak peek of another project I'm working on in the picture above. That project deserves its own (or several) post another day. Can you guess what it is?

Elissa's Quilt - Day 3

So, my mental break has done me well so far, though I admit I fell off the "avoiding-wedding-blogs" bandwagon only a day into it. Still, I feel like I've adopted a new approach to this wedding planning business: keep it simple, keep it fun. I'm sure this seems obvious, but it's a bit unsettling how I needed to remind myself of this.

What has been fun this past week is working on the birthday quilt for my niece, Elissa. I orginally intended to use the Hopscotch pattern from Super Simple Quilts #1, but in the end decided on a variation of the turning twenty quilt (variation means I made up my own pattern because I was too impatient to wait until I was able to buy the original pattern - I had to quilt NOW!). This lap sized quilt pieced together quickly. Last night I made the quilt sandwich and basted it together. Now I get to quilt it, which I'm both excited and nervous about. I've never done free motion quilting, but I hope my BSR foot will prove it's worth the price tag. The only decision left is how to quilt it. Should I do a meandering pattern, or loops? Opinions welcome!

I am a bride, and I am obsessed. I've been pouring over wedding blogs, magazines, and yes, tv shows too. Last night I realized that I needed a break, a little step back from most things wedding related, or else I'll explode by the time I walk down the aisle if not before. More likely, I just won't enjoy the wedding if I keep obsessing constantly over the little details, and that is exactly what I don't want to happen. No no no.

So, for at least the next week I have cut myself off from wedding blogs and magazines and thinking about any wedding decisions that do not need to be made right now. Instead, I'm going to focus on what's really important in life. Like a sweet niece who is turning six (her age is now on two hands!!!) and a machine that is desperate for some quilt action.

I'm starting to feel more relaxed already.

Seed stitch scarf

Before all the pattern making and wedding dress shopping (more about that soon), I was on a fierce knitting kick. One of the things I made was this seed stitch scarf. I wanted a chunky scarf and this fit the bill perfectly. Also, because the yarn was super bulky, it was a very quick and gratifying project. I recently bought more yarn to make a matching hat, but until I finish the bag pattern, I don't think the knitting needles will be seeing much action. At least my neck and chest have been staying nice and warm this winter!

Sewers talk about fabric stashes a lot, but I don't hear a lot of talk about pattern stashes. Well, ladies and gents, I am a stasher of both fabric and patterns and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Fabric stashes are essential for those spur of the moments when you just must-make-something-right-this-instant. Pattern stashes serve the same purpose with the added bonus of actually giving you a little bit of direction. Call me an enabler of stashing if you must.

After I bought my new machine, I had a must-make-a-bag-with-lots-of-interfacing-and-test-this-baby kind of moment. So I pulled Amy Butler's Kimberly Bag out of my pattern stash and some Nigella out of my fabric stash and got to work. I couldn't have been happier with the results of the Bernina or of the pattern.

I recommend this pattern for intermediate to advanced sewers. Although the pattern pieces are accurate and the instructions are clear, I would not recommend this pattern for beginner sewers. New sewers will probably find the zipper, pleats, and heavy interfacing challenging to sew.

The bag style may not be for everyone, I realize, but I like it. I do feel a little like I'm carrying a clarinet case, but it sure is one cool clarinet case, isn't it?

Modifications: I glued an extra panel of Timtex at the bottom between the lining and outer pieces after turning the bag inside out. I added purse feet, hoping to protect the bottom panel from dirt. I also added a simple slip pocket to the lining.

Toast

It's pretty chilly on the east coast these days. I'm always cold, especially my hands and feet, and in winter that just translates to freezing. I had to do something about that. So I knit a pair of Toast. This pattern is called Toast for a reason. They keep your hands and arms nice and toasty. But they could be called Cake, because they were a piece of cake to make.

You all are good folks. You've confirmed that I'm not completely crazy and made me even more excited about making all of the wedding napkins. If anyone ever questioned what my addiction is, the current focus of my wedding planning - fabric napkins - may provide the answer. Hello, my name is Stephanie and I am a fabric junkie. I'm exaggerating slightly - I'm also focused on hiring a photographer, choosing a vendor, choosing a dress, etc etc, but I digress. The good news is that I don't have to make 120 napkins all by myself. You see, some wonderful friends and family have stepped in and offered to help ~~share in my craziness~~ sew the napkins.

Even Anna Maria Horner has unknowingly offered some help. Remember how I said I might have a little trouble finding coordinating fabrics to match this one?

Anna Maria must have some how predicted I would ask this question when she was designing her latest line, Good Folks. She's a mind reader, and apparently a psychic one at that!

Martha and my wedding

I don't know whether to love her or hate her. Ok, I love her. But seriously, every time I look at her website or magazine, the list of things I want to make or do for the wedding continues to grow. For example, has anyone seen the latest issue of MS Weddings, particularly the article about Jen's (one of the owners of Purl Patchwork) wedding? You know, the awesome wedding for which Jen made different napkins for each table from quilting cotton and then made them into a quilt after the wedding? Yeah, guess who now must make about one hundred and twenty napkins for her wedding? That's right, me.

But seriously, how cool is that idea? I wanted to add a personal touch to our wedding and I really love this idea. I'm thinking about a warm purple/pink/golden yellow (is that just gold?) palette for the decorations:

So far I've found one fabric that fits in with these colors (from my stash!): Kaffe Fassett's Verbena Trees in Brown. This is such beautiful fabric. I don't think they are making it anymore. I think it will be a slight challenge to find nine to ten other coordinating fabrics. Any ideas?

So when I'm pulling my hair out trying to make 120 napkins, I'm going to blame Martha. I really must stop looking at Martha Stewart before she has me wanting to whittle all of the tables and chairs next. It's just so fun. Sigh.

Gift Post 2008

Two thousand eight was definitely the year of giving aprons for me. Since both of my nieces enjoy baking with their moms and grandma, I made them child aprons out of some Ginger Bliss fabric. I gave each apron with a copy of a kid's baking book.

I also made an apron for my mom, who desperately needed a cute apron (sorry, Mom, I only speak the truth!). I used the Emmeline apron pattern and some Garden Party fabric.

Though it was much more work than a simple apron, I really like how it turned out. I especially love the fabric on this side. I've already dreamed up a summer dress I'd like to make with this gorgeous Climbing Vines fabric.

Last, but not least, I made some pajamas for my nephews. How cute is that alien flannel? The pants were easy to whip up. I appliqued some of the fabric onto shirts I bought from Target.

As soon as Ryan opened these, he immediately demanded to take off his Christmas outfit and put these on. I can't tell you how satisfying that felt. It was reported to me that my other nephew, Nathan, also wanted to wear his pjs right away. Success!

I almost hate to say this as I am sure it may be hard for many of you to be sympathetic of my current situation. I even hesitated telling my sister during our daily phone call how I'm feeling, knowing full well that with two kids tugging away at her leg she simply could not relate. However, I feel the need to say it. Today I'm feeling a little, well, bored. It's not that I don't have a ton of things to do. (Hello, can anyone say ''wedding"? Let's not go there just yet though.) I'm just feeling a little uninspired. Thank God for Flickr. Strolling through my favorites has given me some motivation and direction that I'm hoping will last for the rest of the day

Two Thousand Eight Review

Happy 2009! If what you do on January 1st is an indication of what you're doing for the rest of the year, then I'm going to be parked on the couch and knitting all year. Maybe I shouldn't have had the last glass of champagne last night...

Before I jump into 2009, let's look back at 2008 for a moment. Here are my sewing goals from 2008 and the outcome of each:

1. Sew a quilt. I've been wanting to do this for a while but couldn't decide on a pattern. I've finally decided. - I made not one, but TWO quilts this year. Yippee!

2. Sew pants. I shouldn't be scared to do this. Finding pants that fit well is probably a lot more difficult than sewing well fitted pants. Right (she asks nervously)??? - Nope, didn't do this.

3. Finish what I start (or else don't start it at all). Enough said. - I think for the most part I was pretty successful with this goal. I don't have a lot of UFOs lying around (only three - two of these are sweaters that just need buttons).

4. Sew with a plan. I am completely guilty of sewing random items that don't coordinate well with other pieces in my wardrobe. This is a shame on many levels but especially so because I don't end up wearing the garment that often. - Again, for the most part I was successful at this.

5. Make at least one pattern on my own. This will be challenging but I am very excited and optimistic about the experience. - I didn't do this.

For 2009, I want to complete my goals for 2008 (sew pants, make my own clothing pattern). I also want to sew better garments. I am guilty of not wearing everything I make. If it's not worth wearing, I don't want to make it.

Another goal for 2009 is to finally finish the pattern that I've been slowly working on for the Barcelona Bag. This bag is my favorite and most used item that I've made all year. I'm hoping with the pattern, others can make it and love it just as much as I do.

Remember my indecision regarding a new sewing machine? I finally made a decision. Or rather, this machine made the decision for me. Seriously. I wasn't even considering the Aurora 440 as it was way out of my price range. After calling a few dealers however, I found a great deal on a gently used 440 that I just could not pass up. She was delivered on Christmas Eve.

We've been slowly getting to know each other. Here's my first attempt at free motion sewing using the BSR foot. In case you're starting to think that I'm a natural at free motion sewing, the smaller letters were made using the built in alphabet stitches.

I still can't believe I own this beautiful machine. I'm very much looking forward to sewing with her and learning everything she can do.

Folks, it's time I bought myself a new machine. I've been saving up for one, it's my birthday soon, my current machine isn't cutting it anymore - I have a ton of reasons. The problem is, I can't decide which one to buy! After several trips to a local sewing machine dealer, I'm now torn between these two options:

The Bernina 1008. This mechanical machine is supposed to be a real workhorse. When I tested it out in the store, it sewed so smoothly. But, will I miss all the bells and whistles of a computerized sewing machine?

Another option I've looked at is the Activa 230 PE. It's at the top of my price range but has everything I want/need. Though, I'm not sure I could quilt a full size quilt on this easily.

I just can't decide - and I'm sure there are even more options out there that I haven't even looked at. Does anyone out there have any suggestions on the machines above or other options? I appreciate your help!

ETA: Both the Activa 230 and 1008 are about the same price when I throw in the extra feet I'll need. So really my decision boils down to whether I want a longer throat plate for easier quilting and more of a workhorse (the 1008 is supposed to be pretty indestructible), or do I want more stitches, buttonholes, bells and whistles. Have I ever mentioned how indecisive I am???

This was a much belated birthday present for my Mom. That zipper was so much more fun than I thought it would be (but I still need to perfect it). Seriously!

I have a finished object too show you, finally! This is New Look 6729 in a knit I bought from Fashion Mart last year. I bought a little over two yards intending to make it into a dress. I decided it would be better as a shirt afterall.

It's a good thing I had over two yards because the long sleeve version of this top really requires it! As you can see, I sewed the ties as the pattern calls for by just hemming the strips. Several sewing.patternreview.com reviewers recommended cutting two extra ties and just sewing them together so the wrong side doesn't show. Unfortunately I didn't have enough fabric so I made do with what I had. I actually don't mind the wrong side showing on this knit since it's not too much of a contrast with the right side. The front middle, right below my bust line, is sagging a bit too much. I'm not sure if this is a pattern flaw or if I sewed something incorrectly. It's nothing that a little hand sewing can't fix.

Overall I am very pleased with this pattern. I might just wear it to my high school reunion this weekend...

Event planning

I'm trying to come up with a reason (excuse) why I've been so absent from this blog recently. First it was Bali, then it was the move, and well, now it's this:

Who knew how much time it would take to plan a wedding? Not I! Though I'm sure many of you are nodding your head in the affirmative. I've been very busy trying to find a place for our outdoor ceremony and reception that has everything we want within our budget. We looked at a place that looks promising and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will all work out. Then I can start with the fun stuff: dresses, decorations, favors, oh my! I'm not a very good planner, so the thought of planning a wedding was a little overwhelming at first. Fortunately, this is all turning out to be so much more fun than I thought (though still a little overwhelming I must admit). The downside is that I feel like one of those people who always talks about weddings now.

If you know of any diy wedding sites, please pass them along. In the meantime, I promise that my next couple of posts will be crafting related (this is a sewing/craft blog afterall) which will help me take my mind away from wedding stuff, for a little while at least.

I'm trying to get my sewing mojo back. I finally had some time to myself after several weeks devoted to unpacking and settling into the new place and what did I do? I stared at my fabric and blanked. I'm just not that excited about sewing winter clothes. So I closed the door and came back after a few hours. Instead of looking at my fabric the next time I entered my sewing room, I pulled out all my patterns for a little sewing inspiration. I then pulled up sewing reviews on Pattern Review and created a short list based on interest, need, and fabric on hand. Here's what made the short list:

Simplicity 4076 in a black, yellow and white knit,

New Look 6729 in a pink multi-stripe knit,

New Look 6807 in a black and grey knit,

and finally Vogue 8420 in a purple cotton knit.

Can you tell I need tops? And that I have a lot of knits in my stash? I'm looking forward to my new winter top wardrobe. I just hope I finish them before winter is over!
